The Village

Welcome to my first blog as a member of Afraid of the Water.

Some of you might have heard from others or concluded from my ramblings that I am absoultly obsessed with the movie "The Village" - written, directed and produced by M. Night Shalymalan. Well, that may be true, however, I assure you I do have good reason. And those good reasons are what I plan to discuss on this blog post.

I love "The Village" because of it's beautiful wording, it's gorgeous cinematgraphy, and it's amasing story of a committed love. But I love more than that. The thing that hit me when I first saw it was the parallel between Lucius and Ivy's love and God's love for us. Lucius loves Ivy with such a commitment that he would do anything for her. He would go into a deadly wood in order that she might regain her sight. God has that same type of commitment to us! He created us and He loves us so amasingly that He would lay down His life for us - and He did! He came to earth and died on the cross that we might be able to spend eternity with Him! Lucius shows his commitment to Ivy in other ways throughout the film too. Ivy trusts Lucius and knows that he will always be there for her. There are two brilliant scenes where Ivy only needs to streach out her hand in the hope that Lucius will find her and get her to safety, and he always does. (There is one exception to this that doesn't related to our relationship with God, but I don't want to ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.) I think that's the way that God responds to us. When we are scared, in despair, anxious, or whatever; all we have to do is streach out our arm and reach out to God and He will be there ready to help us out, comfort us, bring us to safety. The most beautiful part of our relationship with God is that it doesn't matter where we are at. I can turn my back on God and begin to walk away, but if I realize that I need Him, all I have to do is reach out again and He will be there. His commitment to me does not depend on my commitment to Him. And that's good to know, because I screw up a lot!
