name that novel

"Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence, were, all, my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!"

tonight i went to des moines to take some stuff to my sister. i went out to eat with her and my brother-in-law at on the border. yummy. while i was driving to des moines the radio people were talking about the fda or someone or other cracking down on diet pills and saying that they won't solve your problem you need to diet and exercise and the one lady was saying not to buy a certain kind in particular because the one time she took one it gave her serious anxiety for the time being. then they go to a commercial and what are they trying to get you to buy? diet pills. it made me laugh...and then feel really bad.

It's from a Christmas Carol by Dickens (I cheated, thank you google). It sounds like it's a pretty important line, but unfortunately it was left out of the one version of the story I'm familiar with (The Muppets). Ahhh, Michael Caine.

reason and making sense don't seem to be their top priority...it wasn't even a good commercial

I knew instantly what it was from by the first line (not because I've read the book, but seen four movie versions). It was already nailed above though.
